Derma E Solutions for Adult Acne & Scarring

I have combination skin that can lean more towards oily in the summertime. Plus, it’s acne-prone, which I had never had a problem with growing up (so annoying).

So when I received 3 products from Derma E‘s line of acne and scarring products: the Acne Rebalancing Cream, Anti-Blemish Clarifying Bi-Phase Toner, and the Sulfur Spot Treatment, I had to try them.

I had high hopes that Derma E would make a difference with my adult acne.

I used my usual cleanser, then followed with the Anti-Blemish Clarifying Toner.

It has a distinct smell of tea tree oil. The list of ingredients includes rose oil, but I didn’t detect a rose scent at all.

The product separates when sitting on your counter, so you have to give it a good shake before you use it. I saturated an organic cotton round with the product and swept it over my face. This product also contains Vitamin E oil, so there is a little sheen as a result. I liked it, but it didn’t seem to last very long at all.

I followed this up with the Acne Rebalancing Cream. This Derma E moisturizer is really lightweight and creamy in texture. This doesn’t have nearly as much of a scent as the toner, so that was nice. It absorbed quickly and didn’t leave my skin feeling either greasy or tight and dry.

When I wasn’t planning on going out, I applied the Sulfur Spot Treatment. Fortunately, it didn’t smell like sulfur. But, it is noticeably pink. It reminds me of the drying product by Mario Badescu. There’s pink sediment at the bottom of the bottle and the remainder of the bottle is filled with fluid. The instructions state not to shake the bottle, so I used a q-tip and dipped it into the pink sediment at the bottom, and dabbed it on the blemish.

I noticed that my blemishes started to clear over time.

About Acne…

As you know, the skin has tiny holes, called pores. Bacteria, oil, dirt, or dead skin cells can block these pores. When this occurs, the result is a pimple.

According to studies, acne is one of the most common skin conditions in the world. It is not life-threatening but can be very painful in severe cases. It can even lead to emotional distress.

Acne can often appear on the face, and it has been known to cause permanent physical scarring and reduce self-esteem.

What Causes Adult Acne?

Adult acne occurs when the skin pores become blocked with bacteria, dirt, dead skin, or oil.

Every pore on the skin opens up to a follicle. The follicle comprises the sebaceous gland and a strand of hair. The sebaceous or oil gland secretes sebum, which lubricates the skin and keeps it soft.

Problems in this process of lubrication can lead to acne.

Some of these lubrication problems:

Dead skin cells accumulate in the skin pores and are not properly exfoliated.

The sebaceous glands secrete too much sebum.

Bacteria builds up in the skin pores.

A pimple actually appears when bacteria clog up skin pores, and oil cannot escape.

Risk Factors for Developing Acne

There are myths surrounding what contributes to the formation of acne. Some believe it is the kinds of foods people eat, but there is no scientific evidence to support this claim.

However, there may be certain risk factors associated with the development of acne.

They include;

Pregnancy or puberty can cause quick hormonal changes.

Parental inheritance, i.e. parents or ancestors who have acne.

Diets high in carbs or refined sugars.

During puberty, people are at a higher risk of developing acne. During this period, the body is prone to quick hormonal changes, which may trigger higher production of sebum, leading to a higher chance of developing adult acne.

When one reaches adulthood, most of these hormonal changes reduce, reducing the chances of having acne at an older age.

Staging & Classification of Acne

Adult acne can be classified into four stages, depending on its severity. These stages are:

Grade 1 acne: This is the most common and mildest of all. Examples of them are whiteheads and blackheads.

Grade 2 acne: This is more severe than grade one but is not enough to cause significant damage. They include papules and pustules.

Grade 3 acne: This type of acne comes with numerous pustules and papules and also causes inflammation to the skin. In many cases, it may spread to the back and chest.

Grade 4 acne: This type causes numerous inflammatory and painful pustules and nodules. They are also large and colored in most cases.

Treatment depends largely on the severity or stage of adult acne the patient suffers. However, a specialist should be visited whenever there is a slight discomfort in any way.

What are the Types of Adult Acne?

Acne commonly occurs on the face, neck, back, shoulders, and chest, although it may be found on any part of the body. Pimples can come in blackhead or whitehead forms, often called comedones.

Blackheads open on the skin’s surface, giving it a black appearance due to the oxygen present in the air.

On the other hand, whiteheads have a white appearance and are found under the skin surface.

Blackheads and whiteheads may be the most common, but other types of acne occur.

Pustules, for example, are small pimples with pus at the tip.

Cysts are large lumps found beneath the skin, usually painful and containing pus.

Papules are small, raised skin bumps, which are caused by inflamed or infected hair follicles.

Nodules are solid, painful lumps found beneath the skin’s surface.

How Adult Acne is Diagnosed

The simplest and fastest way to diagnose adult acne remains the examination of the skin.

A medical professional can always identify the types of acne and the severity to help determine the best treatment measures.

How Can You Prevent Adult Acne?

It may be a little difficult to prevent acne. However, there are a few steps one can take to prevent acne.

Some of these steps include:

Washing the face regularly with oil-free cleaning products.

Avoiding oil-based makeup.

Removing all makeup and cleaning the skin thoroughly before bed.

Avoid clothing that is tight-fitted.

Reducing stress and eating balanced diets at all times.

Using acne creams to deal with excess oil, like the Derma E products that I found to be good for adult acne.

Seeing a medical professional to learn more about how to manage adult acne.

How Can You Treat Adult Acne?

Things You Can Do to Treat Adult Acne at Home

There are simple self-care routine activities one can try out at home to prevent adult acne and clear up pimples.

Shampooing your hair regularly and keeping it away from the face.

Cleaning your skin regularly with mild soap and removing dirt or oil. The products by Derma E have been instrumental in helping me manage my adult acne.

Using makeup that is mostly water-based.

NOT picking pimples or squeezing them because it spreads excess oil and bacteria.

Not wearing tight headbands or hats.

Topical Treatment of Adult Acne

Various therapies and medications have also proven to be effective. They work by targeting the underlying factors that cause acne.

Depending on the severity of the conditions, topical methods may be useful to treat adult acne.

This may include the application of benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid, azelaic acid, retinoids, antibiotics, and dapsone.

Oral Treatments for Adult Acne

Antibiotics, oral contraceptives, and isotretinoin have also been known to reduce acne.

Other more advanced therapeutic methods to treat acne may include the use of steroids for the reduction of inflammation, lasers to burn up scarred collagen, and chemical peels that use special chemicals to remove the old layers of skin.

Certain medications may include corticosteroids or birth control pills.

You Can Tame Adult Acne

Adult acne may be common among people in the world today, but it can also be treated and prevented, no matter how harmless it may be.

Everyone wants to maintain good skin, and having adult acne can affect our self-esteem.

So it’s important that we be comfortable in our skin and confident in a healthy, radiant glow.
